HSAP Student Assessment Criteria
Students, employers and the HSAP Facilitator need a common set of criteria to work from to identify what an excellent HSAP student apprentice looks like. Below is a list of criteria that we use to determine student progress in HSAP:
ON THE JOB ASSESSMENT
Trade Knowledge:
- Understands and remembers appropriate names for tools and parts.
- Understands and remembers the steps in a variety of different jobs.
- Can accurately follow a plan.
Trade Skills:
- Uses tools and/or technology skillfully.
- Completes work tasks accurately (ex. measurement and calculations).
- Care and pride are obvious in the quality of workmanship.
Production:
- Shows expected improvement in accuracy and work quality.
- Shows expected improvement in speed and efficiency.
Safety Knowledge:
- Learns and follows company safety rules.
- Is aware of tasks and areas that are off-limits.
Safety Application:
- Discusses safety with supervisors as required.
- Wears personal protective equipment as required without prompting.
- Completes jobs safely using tools and equipment.
- Asks questions when faced with an unknown safety situation.
- Looks out for own and other’s safety.
Communication:
- Listens carefully and follows verbal explanations.
- Asks questions for clarification as needed.
- Can follow text and/or diagram instructions.
- Produces clear writing or typing (if needed).
Stays on Task:
- Uses time efficiently to complete tasks and meet deadlines.
- Does not waste time with distractions (e.g. cell phones, unnecessary conversations or overly slow work).
Cooperation:
- Can work as a team member.
- Can anticipate next steps.
- Can do their fair share of the work.
- Willingly assists work partners.
Attempts to Improve:
- Strives to improve through self-awareness of their own work.
- Knowledge continues to grow as expected.
- Can handle more complex work, when appropriate.
Problem Solving:
- Asks for help or reports problems when unable to resolve an issue.
- Can refer to documents (e.g. plans, charts, diagrams, etc.) if needed.
- Can look for the root cause of a problem.
- Does not give up too easily.
PERSONAL SKILLS ASSESSMENT
Motivation:
- Has a willingness to come to work.
- Has a willingness to work on the job site.
Adaptability:
- Can adjust quickly from one job to the next.
- Has a positive attitude towards change.
- Can use knowledge and skills in new situations.
- Has an open attitude.
Relationship with Others:
- Is respectfully appropriate with coworkers, customers, and superiors.
- Is courteous (example: no foul language, disrespectful tone/facial expressions, speaking ill of employees or the business).
Appearance:
- Dresses appropriately for the work and is clean.
Attendance:
- Understands that “on time” means early enough to put away possessions and is ready to do work.
- Understands that break time is not extended into work time.
Dependability:
- Shows a level of trustworthiness that the employer expects.
- Can do routine tasks with mastery.
- Can admit mistakes.
Initiative:
- Cleans up, independently.
- Organizes the work site/tools, independently.
- Seeks new tasks when old ones have been completed.
- Expresses interest in learning new tasks.
- Can predict next steps.
- Shows leadership.
- Shows willingness to do something without being told multiple times.
Accepts Guidance/Teachable:
- Does not get upset when asked to do work differently.
- Is attentive to requests and makes a solid effort to change work/behaviour.
- Uses advice and can handle constructive criticism.
Work Ethic:
- Has a positive attitude toward work.
- Respects work time.
- Takes pride in his/her work.
- Speaks well of the company.
SCORING GUIDE
The criteria is scored using the following system:
10 – exceptional
9 – solid
8 – good
7 – meets minimum requirement
6 – not meeting minimum requirement but shows promise and acceptable improvement
5 – not meeting minimum requirement but shows small improvements
4 or Less – not meeting requirements and requires focused attention
